FAQ Language Classes
Language Center
The language courses offered by the Language Center (ZSL) are open to all students at Heidelberg University. Courses are offered both during the lecture period and, in some cases, in block format during the lecture-free period.
Do the language courses cost anything?
Yes, language courses at ZSL are generally subject to a fee. The exception to this are English courses specifically for students of the B.Sc. Economics, which are free of charge for students of economics.
Can I receive credit for language courses?
Yes, language courses can be used in the ECON1d/2d modules.
Up to 10 ECTS can be used in 100%, as the remaining 10 ECTS must be earned through the Key Competencies seminar (3 ECTS, ECON1d) or the mandatory internship (7 ECTS, ECON4d). However, additional courses can also be listed as additional achievements on your final transcript of records.
In 50%, language courses cannot be used in the ECON1d/2d modules. However, if the Key Competencies seminar must already be completed in your other major, these 3 ECTS in ECON1d can be replaced by language courses.
In the M.Sc. Economics, no language courses of any kind can be used.
Are there placement tests?
Yes, depending on the desired level of the language course, a placement test may be necessary. Details can be found on the ZSL website.
How many ECTS credits do I receive for language courses?
Depending on the level (A1–C2) and scope (2–4 SWS), you can receive a different number of ECTS credits. For a typical 4-SWS course up to and including level B2, you will usually receive 4 ECTS credits, and from level C1 onwards, 5 ECTS credits.
For English courses for economics students, you will receive 7 ECTS (4 SWS).
Can I obtain a language certificate?
Yes, after completing two C1 courses, you can obtain a subject-specific language certificate at the appropriate level from the ZSL. An oral exam must be taken for this.
This language certificate can also be used as proof of English proficiency for the M.Sc. Economics program at Heidelberg University. Whether the certificates are also accepted at other universities is decided by the respective university.
At the ZSL, you can also take other language tests that are necessary, for example, for applications for stays abroad. You can find more information on the ZSL website.
Can I also take language courses outside of ZSL?
Yes, language courses do not have to be completed at ZSL in order to be recognized. Language courses taken during stays abroad or at other institutes of Heidelberg University can also be recognized. If you have any questions about the recognition of language courses, please contact the AWI's academic advisory service.
